Fort Worth's history with the optical industry goes back to 1887. At that time, Fort Worth was a small town in Texas and there were no large companies manufacturing optical equipment. The first company to open up in Fort Worth was a store called Brown & Williamson which manufactured pistols and other firearms. In 1896, when Fort Worth became a city, the first company to receive city permits to sell optical products was Guggenheim Optical Company. One of the earliest products that Guggenheim produced was a microscope. From 1897-1901, Guggenheim also manufactured an oil burner for use in laboratories and from 1902-1905 they produced an automatic slide projector called the Kinematograph projector. In 1907, American Thomson Manufacturing Company opened up in Fort Worth and began producing television sets. Thomson bought out Guggenheim Optical Company in 1914 and continued production of optics until they merged with Sellier & Bell Laboratories in 1947. During World War II, many industries turned to the United States for military supplies such as munitions, electronics, engines and vehicles. Some of these products included cameras and telescopes used by radar operators during wartime airstrikes on Japan; fiber optic cables used to ferry troops over land during training exercises; radios used by soldiers during combat; as well as machine guns and artillery pieces specifically designed for war service. Fort Worth's role within this golden era of American industrial growth is significant not only because it constituted one of the largest metropolitan areas in North America at the time but also because it played an important rolein both world wars providing heavy engineering support for servicemen all across army bases throughout Texas including Fort Worth which contributed 7% of all Army production between 1941-1945 alone! This period saw major technological advances including developments such as color photography (1896), sound recording (1914), automatic writing (1920), 3D printing (1998), lasers (1960) and electrophotography (1927). These advancements have had a profound impact on society as we know it today - from our ability to see things clearly through technology to how everyday objects are now textual documents meant for Printing Presses!
