Around AD 635 CE, Arabs arrived in what is now Fort Worth from Mecca through Central Asia via Byzantine traders working under Arabian leadership-the so-called Omayyad Dynasty (632-661 CE). At this time Islam began to spread throughout much of North Africa and Middle East; therefore Muslims who lived near ancient Syrian towns such as Aleppo or Damascus may have brought Islam to northern Texas before any Europeans did. Some sources claim that one particular Arab trader named Ibn Hawaz al-Maktoum facilitated contact between North African Muslims living in Syria and Texans living along the Sabine River Valley (now Dallas/Fort Worth) during this period….This led eventually to conversion from Judaism to Islam among some Texans during pre-colonial times [1]. In 1795 French forces moved into present day Texas from Louisiana following their victory over Spanish forces at San Jacinto; however, no permanent settlement occurred until 1836 when General Sam Houston founded what would become Fort Worth as his temporary capital….For many years thereafter Ft Stockton served primarily as a military post against Indians…..Today’s downtown district contains significant reminders both olde[r] fortifications dating back to 1846[2] When General Sam Houston settled his army at Mill Creek on November 3rd 1836 he knew his mission statement: “To establish himself permanently at this place I will require 5000 men” [3].
