Gun barrels have been a part of Fort Worth for over 120 years. At the time of Texans’ admission to the United States in 1836, shotguns and pistols were still unknown, other than to Mexican Americans. Shotguns were introduced into Texas in 1839, but it was not until 1861 that handguns became legal in the state. Prior to 1861, handguns were only available to white men and women who could afford expensive equipment and training. Firearms manufacturers did not produce handguns until after the Civil War because they knew they would be needed in order to protect against Confederate attacks on American soil. The first handgun barrel made in Fort Worth was built by George W. Doddridge in 1865. The Doddridge barrel was a 12-gauge shotgun barrel that was manufactured with a “belly band” (a metal ring that connected two of the rifle stocks) which supported the muzzle end of the barrel outside of the gunsmith’s shop so that hammers could be used to fire rounds off of it without having it fall off orEntering into too much detail about each firearm manufacturer who had a hand in shaping Fort Worth’s gun history is beyond this paper’s scope; suffice it to say that their contributions have helped make firearms one of America’s most iconic industries

The Battle of San Jacinto factored heavily into both Texas' admission to the United States as well as its political landscape following Mexico's defeat at Alvarado’s Massacre in 1846. On July 6, 1847 Commodore David Dixon Porter arrived off the Texan coast with his squadron of warships under Rear Admiral John Cushing to invite Santa Anna overland into Texas so that he could be tried for war crimes committed after Mexico’s victory at Buena Vista against Ulysses S Grant’s army two years earlier. At 2 p.m., Commodore Dixon Porter ordered his flagship USS Constitution (1837)and HMS Guerriere (1838)to open fire on Santa Anna's flagship Cavaca as it sailed into port without warning or provocation from Mexico City officials who had been provided false intelligence about American intentions Santa Anna thought he was being attacked by English ships instead and began firing back without warning his Mexican navy crewmembers who then surrendered without putting up any resistance when they saw their captain surrounded Commodore Dixon Porter then entered Mexican ports " peaceably" for inspection purposes only to find out that Santa Anna had not been captured but had actually fled across country before being driven back by Grant's forces On October 20th 1861 Governor Don Carlos Buell issued Order No 1 commanding all state militia forces within 10 miles (16 km) of Dallas to march on Houston...The order also called upon all citizens within these boundaries to arms should martial law be proclaimed...In less than 24 hours more than 7400 people had assembled around Travis Ranch outside present day Arlington Heights Cemetery looking for news of martial law...Under conditions of great secrecy Union Captain Archibald Butt organized an armed group composed mostly of civilians called "the Forty Thieves" made up mainly of men from Dallas social clubs or anti-war activists
