Today, much like other rural Texans struggling through tough times post-9/11 America has placed emphasis on service economy jobs which have helped turn Forney into one of the fastest growing Uptown areas within TXG&A County (the largest metropolitan area within TX). This resurgence has led to new investment including several large medical companies moving their headquarters here from larger markets elsewhere in TX over the past two decades while also resulting in more job creation than recent years even despite overall economic weakness statewide (see table below). Despite these successes there are still some lingering challenges faced by residents such as higher housing costs coupled with infrastructure concerns typical among small towns located near major metropolitan areas (e.g., Austin) while at the same time experiencing increased competition both domestically and internationally for skilled workers (see figure 1).

Forney, Texas was founded in 1874 by George W. Forney and named after him. The town was located on the banks of the Colorado River and quickly became a transportation and trade center for the region. In 1907, Forney was renamed to Amarillo after then-Governor James Fenton Amarillo.
