Forney is a small town in the Texas Panhandle. It is located in Fisher County, about 30 miles northeast of Amarillo and 120 miles southwest of Dallas. The population was 2,636 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1871 by John Forney and his wife Lillie. In 1907, Forney became the county seat of Fisher County. The Forneys donated land to the town for a courthouse and jail. The first school was built in 1912. In 1928, Forney incorporated as a village. In 1965, Forney became an unincorporated community after it withdrew from official government status with the townsite merger that took place in that year in order to reduce duplication of services within the communities. A post office operated until 1978; its last mail service was July 3, 1978. In 2007-2008, $2 million were invested into renovating and expanding portions of both high schools which have since reopened as "Forney Independent School District" High Schools (grades 9 through 12). Additionally $1 million has been put towards creating new parks adjacent to each high school which will include tennis courts and basketball Courts as well as a new library/ park area adjacent to one of those schools

In 1925, Roy Jelliffe donated land along Railroad Avenue north of downtown for an airport; construction began that year and Byng Air Force Base (now Fort Worth Methodist Hospital) was founded on the site. In 1941, Forney became one of several communities incorporated within Amarillo Municipal Airport District No. 2 when that district was created as part of an efforts by then-Mayor Sam Rayburn to improve airport facilities statewide.. In 1965, annexation by Amarillo gave Forney its own city government which lasted until 1977 when it merged with Kerr County into Amarillo–Texarkana Metropolitan Statistical Area
