In 1902, Forney built a schoolhouse and post office near his sawmill. He died in 1907 at the age of eighty-six. His widow, Hetty Crouch Forney, continued to run the business until her death in 1951. Forney's log courthouse was completed in 1915 and replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. It served as the municipal court for the town until 1955 when it was replaced by a new courthouse which still stands today. The courthouse has been used as both a library and museum since its construction and is now open to the public each day from 9am to 5pm from March through October]. The current name comes from a depot built on the old Santa Fe Trail near present day Forney. The post office operated for thirty years before being discontinued in 1923. In 1924, Fort Worth replaced Forney as the seat of Cameron County after it was annexed by the city of Fort Worth. In 1961, Fort Worth annexed most of Cameron County to form Arlington County and now its own government operates within that county with its own elected officials and court system separate from Austin's government. The first post office building in Forney was erected on Main Street about 1900. A second building had been erected on West First Avenue about 1903 when the Atchison Cotton Oil Company established a station there for their employees to transact business while they traveled across Cowboys Wells Road between Atchison and Wichita Falls (present day I-35). A third structure was erected on South Third Street about 1907 when Tom Sawyer Hardware Store opened there; this store later became known as the Gadsden Mall which still stands today adjacent to I-35 just south of downtown Fort Worth - one block east of where Main Street once crossed into Arlington County limits
