The first people to live in Forney were Spanish missionaries who established a mission there in 1836. Forney was named for General James Fenton, commander of U.S. forces during the Mexican–American War and Governor of Texas from 1827 to 1830. In 1865, General Oscar Austin served as governor of Texas and reestablished law and order in Forney following the violence that had characterized much of the state during the previous year's election season. In 1870, Forney became an independent municipality with its own government when it took over part of Vernon County from Comanche County.[1] The area now known as Forney was settled by farmers looking for land north of San Antonio on what was then a vast prairie called "The Great Plains".[2][3] A post office called Forney was established in 1873,[4] and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 6, 1907.[5] By 1880, however, farming had become too difficult on this vast land and new businesses began springing up: banana plantations,[6][7] cattle ranches[8][9], prohibition breweries (the first such business in Texas),[10][11][12]; oil production;[13][14] logging;[15] cotton plantations;[16][17]: all these operations would continue until World War II when they were replaced by large manufacturing plants or services sectors due to technology advances or changing world markets.[18]:301-305 During Prohibition years (1920-1933), many aspects of life within Forney were not unlike those found across much rural Southwestern America which experienced similar boom times during that time frame: wide open spaces for ranching/gambling/mining/manufacturing; organized crime activity taking place away from prying eyes; prices for goods available relatively constant even as costs escalated due to high demand from gangssters throughout North America; jobs available but pay low because most workers were not unionized).[19]:307-309

A few months after World War I ended in 1918, American rifle manufacturers started producing high quality target rifles using chrome-molybdenum steel barrels measuring no more than 18 inches (45 cm) in length—the perfect length for hitting large round objects at distances up to 100 yards (90 meters). Rifle manufacturers quickly realized that these newTarget rifles would become popular among marksmen around the world and soon began production of high quality pistols using this same type of barrel measure
