Forney, Texas is a small town in Midland County, Texas located about 25 miles east of Dallas. The population was 8,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Forney was founded on October 3, 1887 by Harvey Forney and his wife Abby. The Forneys were the first settlers in what would become Midland County and they named their new settlement after their father-in-law's home near Burlington, Iowa. The community quickly grew due to its location, good transportation access and easy access to cotton fields for harvesting. By 1912, Forney had a post office, school and several businesses including a hotel. In 1929, the community added an airport which led to its current name of "Forney Airport". The airport served primarily general aviation until it was leased to Randolph Air Force Base in 1978 and then again to Davis-Monthan AFB in 1992 before it became Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in 2003. In recent years much of the infrastructure that has made Forney such an attractive place to live and work has been replaced with newer buildings or renovated as part of larger redevelopment projects around the city center area known as "The Town." One significant event from early Onward history is when Harvey Forney donated land upstream from his original home on Old Elm Street for what would become Trinity Valley Baptist Church - one of the first churches in Midland County established during pioneer days when only white people lived hereabouts. In 1892 four black men came through Midland County looking for work on sharecropping land south of Fort Worth called Red River Valley which lay between McKinley Dam on one side and Pleasant Grove Creek on another side across Red River Junction (now Throckmorton). They were picked up by wagons headed for Wichita Falls but never reached there because General Sherman's army destroyed all trails leading north from Corinth Springs into Wichita Falls county some time after they got there so they couldn't join up with other freedmen who also started looking for work back eastward along I-35W just before Sherman's march into Arkansas began that November night Gettysburg Day – February 14th 1865! So these 4 Freedmen didn't get far either way! Most Texans know about Forrestal & Haldeman Raids conducted by U.S Naval Forces under Admiral William Doolittle against Japanese forces at Truk Atoll On March 15st 1942 which resulted in Japan surrendering unconditionally without any shots being fired
