At that time TX was part of Mexico and under President James Kenedy it became part of the United States as it did in 1846 when war started between US & Mexico over succession of power after Mexican independence from Spain In 1861 John Witherspoon built a flour mill on Buffalo Creek which along with other mills helped drive down prices for flour around this time making it one of the most important economic engines for Forney during its early years On November 15, 1865 Union soldiers burned down five buildings in downtown Forney which served as a warning to local merchants not to do business with Confederate sympathizers In 1870 Fannie Beattie ran unsuccessfully for election as Mayor against incumbent Sam Houston A post office called "Forney" was established at this time under Postmaster General John Hanks On February 4, 1895 JB Thomason opened up a general store here becoming one of the most prominent retailers in town until he closed his store several years later In 1915 Earle Forney married Bertha Anna Ladd who would later serve as First Lady of Texas
