Forney is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first humans to live in what is now Forney were the Comanche, who were ancestors of the Kiowa and Apache people. The white man first set foot on the present-day site of Forney in 1872 when he discovered gold Mines Road while prospecting for new mines near Waco. The discovery led to a great influx of settlers, and by 1881, Forney had become one of the most important towns in Hudspeth County. A courthouse was built that year and named after Judge James Hines Alford (1824-1902). In 1902, two brothers - J C and John M Overstreet - laid out a town on land next to their rancho called Overstreetville; it became known as Forney. They hired Rube Goldberg as its first mayor; he designed and built many of the early features such as the city hall and post office buildings still today standing in downtown Forney. In 1916, Samuel Colt purchased land east of downtown Frome for an ammunition plant which would later produce firearms under license from Brown & Williamson; this made Forney one of only two places in Texas where pistols could be manufactured without government licensing (the other being El Paso). During World War II employment at nearby Bockenridge Arsenal gave rise to some civic development including a new fire station (1944), public library (1945), park (1946) and high school (1948). After hostilities ended there was continued civilian development with several residential subdivisions being developed along Withrow Boulevard between IH 35E/Upper Loop Drive/Highway 890 until 1963 when Interstate 10 bypassed much of Hudspeth County making it effectively all rural once again On November 25th 1969 Fire Chief Earl Bechtel announced plans for construction beginning on July 1st 1970 of a brand new $14 million dollar fire district headquarters complex consisting primarily of: 2 large barns used as classrooms within fire academy complex; single story Administration Building containing offices/aoide room(s) above ground level also includes Living / Dining Hall, showers etc.; gymnasium with weight room/training areas; 3 main homes plus 10 accessory homes which will form 5 blocks housing developments complete with service roads
