Development stalled during World War II as farmers lost their markets for their products due to military construction projects throughout America; However, after the war Forney regained its stature as an industrial center thanks to growth in manufacturing associated with new oil production discoveries along the Brazos River. In 1970s Forney achieved national attention when it became home to one of the first experiments with recombinant DNA technology known as "Foster's Folly". As a result of this project—the largest such experiment ever conducted at that time—Forney became known as "theDNA capital of America." During the late 2000s recession many small businesses closed down while larger ones went out of business; however Forney bounced back relatively quickly thanks to some innovative marketing practices and job growth within industryally related fields such as health care and information technology.
