The Forest Hill, Texas soft gun case history can begin in the early 1800s when a man named Jesse James and his brothers founded the rancho de las Flores on what is now the corner of First and Second Streets in Forest Hill. The James family operated this ranch for many years, until it was sold to a group of men led by John Houstoun in 1857. This group of men had interests in cattle, sheep, and flour production, so they began to build a railroad line through their land. As the railroad grew, they began to sell their land parcels to settlers. One such settler was Isaac Lambert who built a cabin on what is now First Street in Forest Hill. In 1868, Lambert married Sarah Jane Constable and started living at the house on First Street with his new wife and four children. In 1870-71, he hired an experienced surveyor named George De Witt to surveyed some property around town which would later become known as Deer Park. When De Witt arrived at Lambert’s house on First Street, he found that there were no buildings or land within walking distance of where he was situated! He asked if anyone knew how to find any nearby properties that might be suitable for purchase. One man who responded was Abraham Lincoln who told De Witt that he could find plenty of land around town if he wanted it (Lambert also owned some property near Deer Park). So De Witt set out from his home on Third Street and walked several miles into town before finding what turned out to be an excellent opportunity for purchase: a piece of governmentland just north of Main Street which had been given away as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Civil War! SoDe Witt purchased this property from local farmer Jethro Gibbs for $1 per acre! His purchase made him oneofthe first settlers in Forest Hill –andhewouldcontinuetoholdproperty here until 1902!
Forest Hill is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 403 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in Forest Hill was James A. Mealey who came to what is now Forest Hill in 1871 from Illinois. Mealey built a cabin on his large land grant and named it "Mealey's Grove". In 1903, the name of the town changed to Forest Hill after Dr. Samuel Fenton bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land near present-day Forest Hill and Strawberry Creek for $10 per acre ($2 million today). In 1916, Forest Hills School District #1 became one of six school districts within the Austin Independent School District; this change created a need for a new high school which would also serve as the district's library and theater complex. On July 1, 1916, Forrest Hills High School opened as one of six high schools within Austin ISD #1 and remain so today as one ofAustin’s most well-known educational institutions that has produced many notable TX politicians and entrepreneurs including Ulysses S Grant Wood Jr., Lyndon B Johnson, Bob Dole and Phil Gramm among others On September 25th 1870 by order of Governor Hogg an act was passed by the Texas Legislature authorising John Witherspoon Applegate to purchase from Walter Scott 5 leagues or 12 square miles (30 km²) lying eastwardly on Clay Road about 4 miles (.6 km) northwest of present day Fort Hood US Army Garrison; this tract being exempt from taxation under Act No. 794 entitled "An act for founding a county" A plat was drawn up by Witherspoon Applegate dated October 5th 1870 known as "Applegate's Rancho", containing 350 acres (160 hectares). This rancho included forested land adjoining Clay Road situated eastwardly on said road between two creeks called Strawberry Creek & Orange Creek & bounded southwesterly by Oak Park Cemetery towards Summit Lake (& thence easterly along Summit Lake & laid out into streets etc.). The lot included buildings described below: buffaloes were kept here & there were some hogs too but no cattle now farm buildings consisted of: house, barn/milk house/ Dairy Barn(now used as apartments), milking shed(now used as apartments), store building with three stories(now used as apartments), kitchenette above basement floor - 3 story brick + 2 story gabled roofed cellars facing west on Clay Rd., 2 stories stone second floor addition with attached garage& hyphenated “W” marked above entrance . . . Other building types are not mentioned but may have been domes or even houses with flat roofs
