When World War II began over Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941, many Americans turned their attention towards Europe instead; however, Fort Worth Mayor Phillip Ball (term limited) decided that Fort Worth should stay neutral and refused orders from military authorities not to open its arms against Japan without justification or warning the public! On April 2 1945 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which ordered all American forces throughout Asia – including Fort Worth – into action against Japan! Japanese forces had bombed Pearl Harbor two days earlier so no one knew about it until just before 9am local time when news reporters received information through Ultra decrypts that an attack had occurred! At approximately 10am local time General MacArthur arrived at Ft Hood with orders telling him that hostilities had begun! This event marked the end of World War II for America as general MacArthur became Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces Pacific while Admiral Chester Nimitz took over as Commander-in-chief of United States Naval Forces Far East! In 1865, the 6,000 acre Forest Hill plantation was founded by Colonel James H. Forrest from Tennessee. Forrest and his family were among the first to live on the property. The Forrests developed it into a large cotton plantation that employed over 100 slaves in 1850. The plantation was sold in 1867 to John M. Lilly, who renamed it Forest Hill Plantation near San Antonio. In 1876, Forest Hill Plantation became part of the Texas Railroad System and was leased to the Texas Central Railway for 99 years until its sale in 1924 to Standard Oil Company of Texas. During World War II, Forest Hill Plantation served as a training ground for U.S military personnel located in San Antonio and nearby Beeville. In 1984, the Litton Company donated land adjacent to Forest Hill Plantation for use as a community park with trails, playgrounds, basketball courts, a swimming pool and other recreational amenities.
