In 1925, Forrest Jakes purchased part of Ladd's property which he donated back to the community as a park honoring Forrest Jakes' donation during World War II when he served as captain of the local military unit known as "The Texans". As word spread about Forest Hill's rare breed of hogs (theForestHill Hog), market demand led Jakes to reopen his hog farm in 1961 which continues today as one of only two hog farms remaining continuous within Texas statewide! In addition to its agricultural roots, Forest Hills also boasts some notable historical landmarks including: 1) The first post office was established at Forest Hills in 1846 by Elijah Frye; 2) A Methodist church was constructed there in 1865; 3) A school house was built there in 1865; 4) A sawmill was built there around 1880; 5) An elevator company called United Elevator Company was organized here around 1912; 6) A grocery store called Fidelity Grocery & Hardware opened here around 1916; 7) A fire destroyed many homes between 1936-1937; 8)A hospital was constructed here between 1938-1939; Parish School No.# 3 (now First Baptist Church building), also known as "Hospital School", opened its doors on October 25th 1939 withresourceful assistance from Mrs Perkins who managed her father's general store across the street until her death on September 20th 1957 aged ninety three years old! It should be noted that Mrs Perkins played an important role not just because she managed her father's store but also because she provided leadership during both world wars while working tirelessly behind closed doors providing food for soldiers camped outside her door! She left behind an amazing legacy which included this unique educational institution that still provides education for young children today!
