Forest Hill is a small town in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Harry and Lillie Smith in 1887. They named it after Forest Hill Manor in London, England which they had visiting relatives in. The first post office was established in Forest Hill on July 12, 1888. In 1954, the community merged with neighboring towns of Indian Wells and Garnett to form the new city of Garland. Garland's incorporation as a municipality did not take effect until 1959 when all three communities were re-established as separate villages within Garland Municipal District #2. In 1984, Forest Hill voters approved annexation into the city of Amarillo through a referendum process that followed an ordinance authorizing annexation by City Council resolution number 5646 dated March 8, 1984 from then Mayor Dick Yarborough (D). In 2013amarillo annexed both towns back into forest hill unofficially following protest from residents who felt their elected officials were betraying them by not properly considering their wishes before annexing those towns back into Amarillo proper

Forest Hill was founded in 1847 and is the oldest town in Texas. It is located on the banks of the Trinity River, about 20 miles north of Austin. The town became a railroad stop and then an agricultural center. In the 1920s, Forest Hill was acquired by Pecan Grove Homes, which renamed it Forest Hills Village. The original homes have been replaced by new estates and subdivisions since then. The history of Forest Hill can be traced back to when Mexico began to colonize Texas in 1836. They set up small villages along the riverbanks, but they were quickly conquered by the United States. By 1840, all Mexican villages had been destroyed or driven out of Texas. Texans began to settle in what is now eastern Central Texas and started trading with Mexico for goods such as hides and leather. One man, John Fenton, developed a farm at what is now Forest Hill in 1847 using his own resources and money from family investments. In 1850, he moved his family to this location and started to grow pecans (a type of nut). He also built a few houses hereabouts for himself and his workers. In 1865-1866, General Ulysses S Grant fought a bloody battle against Confederate forces near Forrest County while invading Texas; afterward he ordered Fort Robertson constructed at nearby San Antonio as part of General Edwin Ewell’s effort against secessionist activity insideTexas.(2) This fortification helped prevent any Confederate troops from escaping into Mexico.) In 1886-1887, local farmers formed an Agricultural Land Company that bought 160 acres (65 hectares) of land east of town on the Trinity River for $8 per acre ($160/hectare).(3) This land would become known as “Forest Hill” after its founder JFenton gave it this name.(4) From hereonforth most residents cultivated crops such as cotton or corn rather than building their own homes or businesses.(5) In 1925-1926 Pecan Grove Homes purchased 8 parcels totaling 219 acres (100 hectares), east of Forrest Hills Village proper on FM 925 for $50 per acre ($1 million/hectare).(6) These tracts would become known as “Pecan Grove Park” after Gail Pecan Grove's husband Seward Parkinson donated some 400 trees thereabouts.(7) With this purchase came renewed interest in developing Forest Hills because there was no permanent home available within commuting distance for those living within its boundaries anymore.(8) A few years later A&M University purchased 5 parcels totaling 192 acres (72 hectares), west of Forrest Hills Village proper on FM 925 for $30 per acre ($640/hectare).(9)(10)(11){12} With these purchases came anew interest in developing Forest Hills because there was no permanent home available within commuting distance for those living within its boundaries anymore.; however A&M decided not to develop it further due to financial reasons.$14 million later spent on various real estate developments throughout Central Texas ultimately ledtothedemiseofForestHillVillageandthe beginningsofAustin'sEastside Neighborhood
