Forest Hill is a town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Forest Hill were five men and one woman who arrived on horseback from Missouri on July 7, 1853. They had been traveling through Williamson County when they discovered a tract of land that had been claimed by Major General Zachary Taylor. The group numbered 25 people and named their new settlement "Taylor's Colony." In 1857, two more families arrived and renamed the town "Forest Hill" after President James K. Polk's home state of Illinois. According to one account, the town fathers decided not to call it "Dallas" because it would have appeared as if they were bragging about their county seat while neglecting another important community in Williamson County which was also called Dallas. By 1860, Forest Hill had an population of 350 people and its own post office. In 1865, forest hills citizens helped build Austin's first schoolhouse - now known as White Rock School - which served the community until 1907 when it burned down due to weather damage. In 1870-71 Forrest Hills built a flour mill according to plans provided by J P Gunnels & Sons Ltd., of Philadelphia PA; this mill operated until 1922 when it caught fire and burnt down reducing both production and employment in the village for many years afterwards (the photo shows what may be remnants still standing today). The mills closed but left behind a large dune field across FM 627 from where Forest Hills sits today – remnant evidence of what may have once been their flourmill complex! . . . Forest Hill is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,993 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Forest Hill was founded in 1876 by Methodist missionaries as a station on the newly completed Texas Central Railroad. The name "Forest Hill" originated from the fact that much of the land for which Forest Hill was founded had been purchased from farmers who were clearing away forest to make way for plantations. The first settlers in Forest Hill were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1876 and named their settlement after Mission San Fernando Rey de España (later known as Fort Worth). When the railroad reached Forest Hill in 1886, it brought with it new opportunities for growth and development. A sawmill, ironworks, grocery store and other businesses soon sprang up around the depot and train station. In 1912, Forrest High School opened its doors to students in Forest Hills. The school's first building was a two-story wood frame structure located on present-day Elm Street nearpresent-day Commerce Drive. In 1928, an addition to Forrest High School became home to North Dallas Junior College (now NorthDallas Community College). In 1940, when Forrest Holt Elementary opened its doors to students in Forest Hills, it served as one of the few public schools within distance of residents in Tyler and Fort Worth proper. AsTyler grew more populous and commercialized during World War II, demand grew for educational institutions closer to home that could offer vocational training programs suitable for local industries such as munitions manufacturing or aviation production. Northern Dallas Junior College became eligible for grant money from US Treasury Department wartime assistance programs which allowed it to expand its enrollment by 50%. By 1951, all but one of Forrest Holt Elementary's buildings had been replaced with permanent classrooms and auditoriums thanks to financial support from local philanthropists John Denton Sr., Mrs Eleanor Blanton Denton III., Dr Clements Burt Connell IV., Jr.–the son of cofounder Dr Clements Burt Connell IV.–and others. On July 20, 1836, a group of settlers arrived on the outpost known as Forest Hill in present-day Texas. The group was led by Major John Hitt and consisted of upward of 25 men. The group had come from Kentucky and were looking for a place to build their own rancho. They found the land and set about building their home. The first settler on Forest Hill, John Hitt, died in 1837. But his wife, Eliza Hitt, continued to live here until her death in 1901. She was one of the original Pioneers who founded Forest Hill and is considered its namesake. There are also several descendants of Eliza Hitt still living in Texas today.
