Forest Hill is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,002 at the 2010 census. Forest Hill was founded in 1875 by Hernando de Soto and his wife, Maria Cosme de la Garza y Ponce. It is named for Forrest Gump, an American author and movie star who lived nearby in Carthage. The first post office in Forest Hill opened on May 6, 1875. The name of the town was changed to Forest Hill on December 2, 1895 after it merged with neighboring Springdale. In 1907 the state legislature passed a bill providing for the erection of schools in all towns within Johnson County so that children could receive good educational opportunities. On October 9 of that year, the first school opened in Forest Hill with 20 students grades K-8th grade. The school continued until it closed in 1963 due to financial difficulties caused by World War II shortages of materials and fuel resources necessary for education institutions during the war years. In 1962 Forrest Gump actress Rita Hayworth donated $1 million to help start a college degree program at Prairie View A&M University which would eventually become Texas A&M University System (). Forest Hill is a small town in Midland County, Texas, located on the east side of the county. The population was 2,052 at the 2010 census. Forest Hill is one of two towns in Midland County that are both still entirely rural. The other town is Gadsden Junction. The first settlers to Forest Hill were farmers from Kentucky who moved to this area around 1845. By 1860 there were 5 families living in Forest Hill and by 1870 there were 15 families living there. In 1870 additional settlers came from Ohio and Illinois and by 1880 the population hadgrown to 30 families. In 1907 the post office called Forrest Hill "Foul Play" because it was a favorite spot for game of softball because "the woods near Forrest Hall provided cover from pursuit by law enforcement." The name changed to Forest Hills in 1958 when Post Office Administration decided that noone would confuse Foul Play with Forrest Hills, which then became an unincorporated community within Midland County. In 1915 a group of businessmen established what is now known as Texaco (later Chevron) near where the old water tower stands today. This early business activity helped drive industry out of downtown Dallas and into nearby Midland County, making Forest Hills one of the most industrialized areas outside Dallas at that time. One ofForestHill's most famous residents was Texaco executive Edmond "Bud" Guthrie who served as Mayor of Dallas from 1959 until his death in 1966 after a long career in government service including stints as Secretary of State and Director of Central Intelligence under John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson respectively
Foothill Ranch was a cattle ranch located in Forest Hill, Texas. The ranch was founded by John A. Stewart in 1881 and continued to be run by his family until it was sold to the community of Forest Hill in 1963. The original fence around the property still remains today.
