In 1850, it became the seat of Hidalgo County after its creation from parts of Travis and Williamson Counties. However, since 2000 Forest Hill has experienced an influx of new residents as a result of development around Interstate 35W and I-10 south of town. Franklin D Roosevelt Elementary School was built in 1939 on land that once belonged to General Sam Houston State Park; it is one of only two schools still standing from when Fort Worth was founded in 1836. The school served students until 2002 when it became part of Texas A&M University System's New College campus complex; now it serves students from nearby UT Austin who attend Aggie Stadium for football games.
