He and his party were lost on their way to identify a new route through Indian Territory when they passed by Flower Mound. The name stuck and the town was platted in 1875. Most of the original settlers came from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee during the Reconstruction period after America's Civil War (1861-1865). They worked on ranches or farms until 1887, when oil drilling began in nearby Haskell County. This led to an influx of Texans into Medina County, some of whom settled near Flower Mound. By 1900, there were 794 people living in Flower Mound with 130 businesses and $1 million in assets. This boom time ended abruptly with World War I (1914-1918) and postwar depressions that caused many farmers to sell their land and leave Flower Mound behind. Starting around 1920, Plantation Homes Ltd., a housing development company controlled by Houston oilman George Wickersham began purchasing parcels of agricultural land east of town for use as subdivision plots or "birthplaces." Wickersham renamed his development "FlowerMound" after himself because he saw it as an opportunity to break down racial barriers among Texans by creatinga integrated community where all races could live side by side without fear of discrimination or incompatibilities arising from cultural differences alone
Flower Mound is a town in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,715 at the 2010 census. The community took its name from nearby Flower Mound Hill. The first white person to live in the area was Tom Fenton in 1835. He erected a cabin on what is now Flower Mound Hill and named it after his hometown of Flowermound, Scotland. A post office called "Fenton" had been established in 1837, but no mail was received until 1840. In 1851, George Tilton built a gristmill on the banks of the San Angelo River and named it after himself. In 1865, Texas Monthly published an article about Native Americans living along the Brazos River near present-day Flower Mound. The writer noted that some of these people were known as the "flower men" because they would collect wildflowers for sale to traders and settlers. By 1870, there were six settlements with names such as Fort Worth Heights (now part of Plano), Grand Prairie Heights (now Irvington), Lubbock Plains (later Midland City), East Fork Creek (now White Settlement), and West Fork Creek (now Flower Mound). By 1880, most of what is now Chambers County had been organized into districts within State District 10 west of Austin; so when Valentine Moody moved his mill from Lubbock Plains to this area in 1886 he founded Valentine's Mill which still stands today just east of I-10 west of town limits
