Flower Mound, Texas is a small town in Harrison County, Texas on the border of Navarro and Brown Counties. The population was 2,693 at the 2000 census. It is located near the cities of Austin and San Antonio. One of the first people to settle in Flower Mound was John Overstreet who purchased land in 1851. He built his home on what is now Elm Street. Overstreet's son-in-law, James Witherspoon, also settled in Flower Mound around this time. In 1860, Witherspoon married Anna Palmer who lived in nearby Palestine with her family. Anna Palmer had arrived from Iowa with her parents and siblings when she was just six years old. Anna Palmer later married John Overstreet's son Stephen Overstreet II and they moved to Flower Mound together in 1865. The growth of Flower Mound began to take hold during the late 1800s as farmers began to increase their production of crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat. By 1900, there were over 100 homes in Flower Moundand it had a population of 461 people! Many businesses were started here including J C Penney & Co., H L Hunt Manufacturing Company (now Kress Paper Products), A G S Clothing Company (later part of Sears Roebuck & Co.), The First National Bank (later Wells Fargo), G E Biddle Shoes Company (soon renamed Goodyear Tire & Rubber) and many more! A few years after its founding, Flower Mound became an important stop on the Butterfield Railroad which ran between Dallas and Houston through Harrison County! This railroad made much needed income for locals and contributed greatly to their economy! In 1912, FlowersMound played host to World's Fair which took place throughout America! Thousands of people came here to see various exhibits including architecture from all over the world as well as local products like flowers! As part of celebrations for this event that year, community members erected a large banner reading "Welcome Home - American Floral Expo!"
