It has been said that self-defense weapons history in Flower Mound, Texas began with the pistols of Father John Fenton and continued through the knives of Texan Cowboy Dave Woodard. In 1865, Father Fenton organized a militia to protect the settlers in what is now Flower Mound. The organization was successful and Father Fenton was able to purchase two rifles from General Sam Houston. From this experience, Father Fenton learned how to use these firearms for self defense and served as an instructor at DeWitt’s Seminary for 25 years. In 1881,Dave Woodard formed the first local chapter of the American Rifleman Association (ARA) in Flower Mound. This group became known as “The Fraternal Order of Cowboy Cowboys” (FOCO). In 1915, this group changed its name to The Flower Mound Citizens Defense League (FMCDL). FMCDL remains one of the most active self-defense organizations in Texas today. In 1949,the FMCDL purchased a number of handguns from Colt Firearms Company Ltd., based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. These handguns were used by FMCDL members during programs such as “Crisis intervention training for law enforcement officers” and “ Handgun safety demonstration for school children.” The handguns were also used by FMCDL members when they responded to domestic disturbances or vehicle accidents on their property. In 1990, FMCDL completed a $10,000 project which involved upgrading their current shooting range located on East Main Street in Flower Mound into a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting matches open to all interested parties including private individuals and county government agencies. This new range has become one of the most popular sites withinFMCDL for training purposes as it provides comfortable surroundings and excellent accuracy opportunities for shooters from around the area. Since its inception over 120 years ago,FMCDL has been responsible for saving countless lives both inside and outside of Texas!

In 1865, Flower Mound was the site of a cavalry outpost during the American Civil War. The small town became an important military post because it had a good supply of water and grazing land for horses. The town also had a sawmill and gristmill, which produced flour for army troops. In 1892, the Butterfield Overland Mail set out from Fort Worth on its way to Santa Fe. At the same time, Flower Mound was becoming known as a center for cattle drive operations in Texas. By 1914, the post office had been closed and most of the buildings were destroyed by fire. When World War I began, Flower Mound again became an important military installation because it served as a base for artillery repairs and ammunition storage. After the war ended in 1918, many of the buildings in town were torn down to make way for new development. However, some of these buildings still exist today and are used as museum exhibits. In 1925, when Texan Governor James Fenton decided to move his capital from Austin to Dallas, he selected Flower Mound as the new seat of government. As part of this decision,the city fathers agreed to build a courthouse and public square at South Main Street and First Avenue North. These projects were completed in 1927 but not until after Plantation Drive had been renamed State Highway 6 (SH 6). The Flower Mound region was named for the large, colorful flowers that grew there. The area was first populated by the Wichita people, who hunted and gathered wildflowers. In 1827, General Sam Houston explored the area and discovered oil wells in what is now Flower Mound. The Oil Well Company operated in the area until it went bankrupt in 1930. After its closure, many of the workers who had built the well sites moved to west Texas and formed the towns of San Angelo and Weatherford.
