The town of Flower Mound, Texas is located in Johnson County and has a population of around 4,500. The community was founded in 1875 by Colonel John H. Wise and his family, who were farmers. He named the town after the flower mound he had seen while surveying the area. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century and soon became a major agricultural center in Johnson County. It remained an important commercial and social center until the mid-20th century when it began to decline as a result of rural depopulation and environmental problems. However, recent development has restored some aspects of its past glory, including its cultural significance as a center for flowers and gardeniculture. Flower Mound was settled primarily by Texans from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived in droves during the late 1840s to prospect for oil shale near Fort Worth. Many men died during these arduous trips due to hardships such as altitude sickness, malaria, or overwork. In 1845, Captain James Sibley established himself on what is now Flower Mound Creek with four families from Hendersonville, Tennessee. By 1865, Sibley had developed several successful mines here which led to increased demand for labor in nearby mining camps throughout Central Texas (Ferguson & Kimmel 2006). As more people came into this region seeking opportunities for wealth and adventure new mine shafts were dug into deep chalkholes providing excellent natural ventilation (Dodge 1896). By 1870 there were over 1,000 residents living in Flower Mound Creek Village (Ferguson & Kimmel 2006; Winkler 1960). In 1875 Colonel John H Wise bought 840 acres along Flower Mound Creek from Captain James Sibley for $2 per acre ($50 total) (Wise 1895a). With this purchase Colonel Wise laid out a small village that would become one of Johnson County’s most important communities due to its location at the confluence of two major rivers –the White River (now known as Tomball Lake)and Flower Mound Creek. This strategic location made it easy for farmers to get their goods to market without having to navigate through hostile Indian Territory (Johnson 1909b; Ginther 1974: 87-88). Although little is known about Colonel John H Wise himself other than his name he appears to have been an accomplished landowner with an interest in agriculture (Ginther 1974: 88-89). Over time many others followed suit making up what would eventually be called “the Pioneer Generation” who left their mark on local history by establishing schools and churches hereabouts (Wise 1895a; Ferguson & Kimmel 2006; Winkler 1960: 5-6).
