Nevertheless, Flower Mound continued to serve as a popular stop on wagon trains until it ceased operations in 1868. By then, it had become an abandoned settlement that was first visited by lightning in 1870 and later destroyed by fire in 1872.
The Flower Mound National Monument was established on November 6, 1916, as a national monument to the memory of those who fought in World War I and the Spanish-American War. The monument honors the soldiers and civilians who died during these conflicts.
