The town began as a small farming village and gradually evolved into a center of commerce and industry. Today, Flower Mound is an important cultural and economic center in southeastern Texas. The first inhabitants of what is now Flower Mound were farmers who grew corn, beans, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables on their farmsteads near the mouth of the Wichita River. By 1871, these settlers had built a rudimentary city on the bluff overlooking the Wichita River. They called their community "Flower Mound." The early residents of Flower Mound were primarily German immigrants who had come to America from East Prussia in 1815. Many of these pioneers married American women and raised families here in what is now Flower Mound. In addition to their farming activities, some early Germans also engaged in shipbuilding and lumbering. The influx of new people during the late 1800s created increased demand for goods and services available within Blossom Creek Valley – which bisected by Bloomfield Road at its eastern edge – including those offered by local businesses located along Vine Street between First Street and High Street (Edwards Avenue). This growth caused major problems for government officials whose efforts to keep up with population growth were thwarted by infrastructure limitations dating back to before European settlement in this area occurred. In 1907, however, City Manager John Haney recommended that Blossom Creek Valley be annexed by Dallas because it seemed likely that development would take place there anyway; annexation was approved two years later.* After annexation occurred, additional businesses moved into downtown: banks such as Jardine & Brothers (later Jardine-Haley) opened their doors; hotels such as Bellevue Castle became popular among visitors; department stores like Sears & Roebuck opened locations; restaurants served various types of food until World War II when they closed down or converted to military barracks† [* Note: This story has been changed since it first appeared.] And finally a variety of professional businesses flourished: dentists operated out-of-house clinics while physicians practiced out-of-town; architects designed new homes for wealthier citizens while contractors provided services such as water systems installation† [*Note: These stories have been changed since they first appeared.] . Fifty-seven years ago, Flower Mound was a small town located in southeastern Texas. Today, the community is known for its famed flower gardens and Traditional Mexican Folk Art Museum. The history of Flower Mound began with two families who started farming in the area in the early 1800s. Over time, other family members and settlers took up agriculture, giving rise to a village that boasted a small grocery and general store. By 1900, the population of Flower Mound had grown to over 100 people. The first post office opened in 1907 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1920. In 1916, local farmers founded the Flower Mound Civic Club to promote agricultural production and educational opportunities for their children. The club operated a vocational high school from 1925 until 1957 when it closed due to financial problems. From 1928 until 1977, the civic club sponsored an annual county fair which drew more than 1 million visitors annually. The fairgrounds were also home to manyFlower Mound residents parade their street cars through downtown on Mother's Day each year during Spring Carnival
The Flower Mound area was first settled by the Kiowa and Comanche Indians in the early 1800s. The land around present-day Flower Mound was acquired by A.G. Hance in 1875, who built a mill on the river near today's Farmers Branch. The town of Flower Mound was founded in 1881, and soon became an important lumber center for the surrounding area. In 1907, a dam was built to store water from nearby Hill Country reservoirs, which caused extensive flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in the town. The flood damage also resulted in the demolition of much of downtown Flower Mound and its replacement with a more modern infrastructure.
