Flower Mound, Texas is home to the Flower Mound Rifle and Pistol Club. The club was organized in 1892. The club met at the old Methodist Church in Flower Mound. The first rifle match was held in 1893. In 1896, the club formed a shooting team and began using the name “Citizens”. In 1902, they changed their name to “Flower Mound Rifle and Pistol Club” and held their first meetings at the Civic Center on South Main Street. In 1909, they moved to their current location on West Seventh Street near US-355. In 1916, they hosted their first annual firearms show which attracted many exhibitors from all over Texas. They continued to hold shows until 1949 when they switched to hand guns only. They resumed hosting Shows in 1957 but have not done so since then due to lack of interest from members or funding statewide). The club has played an important role in history by hosting many NRA meetings and events throughout this century including being one of the original clubs that participated in NRA Heritage Week in 1978 and 1984 as well as being one of the founding clubs for NRA Statewide Recreational Shooting Days in 1987 which still takes place every year here at Flower Mound High School!

These rifles used a different type of stock than nipple stocks and also featured sights on them instead of nipples. In 1898, Sam Houston rifle company started manufacturing firearms in Flower Mound also using an Enfield barrel for their guns. Their guns became known as the "Houston rifles." These rifles used another type of stock than nipple stocks and featured sights on them instead of nipples too.

This move allowed Flower Mound more control over its own destiny and helped make it one of the most vibrant cities in Texas during this time period. The Flower Mound Settlement began in 1836 as a small ranch and farmstead on the eastern side of the Brazos River. The settlement was named for Captain James Fenton, who explored the area in 1835. By 1840, the Fenton brothers had founded a more permanent community at Flower Mound. By 1850, there were 180 residents living at Flower Mound. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Brazos River and its access to irrigation water. In 1870, the town became a part of Austin and by 1880 it had 1,200 residents. The agricultural industry played an important role in early Flower Mound development and production of cotton, corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops helped support the town's growth.
