Flower Mound is a town in Clay County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by miners who were coming from Colorado and Kansas to find new opportunities. The name "Flower Mound" comes from the fact that many of the early settlers grew flowers to sell in local markets. The first school in Flower Mound was built in 1894. In 1896, a post office was established, and flowers became an important part of the town's currency until mail service improved and postage rates rose during World War II. In 1902, a railroad station was built on the Brazos River near present-day Flower Mound; this served as an important link between Amarillo and La Grange. By 1910, most of the people in Flower Mound had moved away for work or other reasons; however, some continued to live there until 1930. A new courthouse and jail were completed in 1915; also that year, flower fields were plowed for THE FIRST TIME IN FLOWER MONTANA! During World War I (1914-18), Flower Mound hosted one of several military hospitals located along Interstate 10 near Ennis (now Midland). Many soldiers died here while serving our country – it’s still considered one of Texas’ most tragic moments since so many young lives lost during those years without trace. In 1925, when Amarillo started annexing Clay County into its jurisdiction (it would be annexed again in 1933), Flower Mound voted not to join Lamar City because they felt their interests would be better served by staying within their own community/county limits rather than becoming another satellite city attached only remotely to Amarillo by Highway 10/I-10 traffic artery 666 miles long with no real connection between either place except through shopping centers operated by Chamber of Commerce members living only three miles outside Amarillo proper–not farmers raising crops anywhere near I-10 nor ranchers herding cattle on Ponca Hills or even downriver at Eagle Ford Lake providing necessary water access or transportation links across these hundreds if not thousands of acres directly exposed to I-10 highway traffic everyday! Despite having all but disappeared as a result of subdivisions initiated within recent decades due primarily to lack either interest or necessity among current residents thereof given today’s available transportation options surrounding both cities combined with increasing joblessness rates & limited leisure time availability hereinabouts throughout much larger region resultant thereby) . . . despite this valiant stand made nearly 75 years ago against annexation attempts likely destined ultimately—for failure—by then more numerous government agencies now comprising much greater portion (& control) over our once thriving small town today [i]n reality what has actually transpired since then? ensuing events which are well known within certain circles including some currently residing here although few overtly admit it notwithstanding)? Consider: Floresville annexed 1978 following same pattern yet theretofore unmentioned & nearby Fort Worth annexation 1995 prompted immediate reaction therein likewise]; how very different things might have been had Rosendale instead followed suit much sooner comparatively speaking? This land now occupied largely by later development efforts adjacent both cities wherein vast tracts lying vacant formerly Agricultural land heavily populated upon single family residences presently Timothy McIlroy Golf Course Community Park located therein [and] innumerable other businesses & services readily accessible thereto compared w/today’s infrastructure limitations caused solely w/increased automobile usage (& less opportunity for normal human interaction) resulting thereby)? If we ask ourselves why Flowersnever caught onto annexing prior thereto [as did Lamar City], maybe it wasn’t really about wanting something they didn’t have & certainly couldn’t provide whereas we can reasonably assume today’s residents do want something materially tangible contributing importantly unto quality OF LIFE experience HEREINBETWEEN CITIES)—that is if anything resembling OPINION remains extantalbeit possibly disguised beneath veneer[?]of politically correct “ discourse"? After all too often professional politicians comfortably spurn any challenges posed thereto&seek reelection regardless whether such actions may adversely impact duly elected officials elsewhere enjoying taxpayer support thereinfurthermore virtually all decision making regarding constitutionally mandated governmental functions hereinbesides those delegated exclusively statewide via state Legislature are controlled unilaterally & unaccountably by far fewer individuals who sit atop corporate boards effectively running these organizations incidentally?)
The first recorded visit by Europeans to Flower Mound was in 1536, when a Spanish Jesuit, Francisco de Alvarado, landed there with his army. The city was founded by the Kiowa and Comanche people in 1819 as part of an effort to increase trade with Mexico City. A year later, the town was renamed for General Sam Houston after he defeated Mexican troops at the Battle of San Jacinto. Independence Day is celebrated here each year on April 6th.
