The Flower Mound, Texas history began in the early 1800s when a group of Texans decided to build a new town on the banks of the Red River. The town was named after a mound of flowers that had been found near the site. The town slowly grew and around 1853 it became the capital of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. In 1881, Cottonwood County was created from parts of Coahuila y Tejas and Flower Mound became its county seat. The population peaked at 25,000 in 1920 but then declined rapidly as farming ceased to be profitable and World War II caused a decline in population. By 1960, Flower Mound had only 5 residents remaining and by 2000 it was all gone, leavingbehind only memories of the once thriving community.
