Farmers Branch, Texas is a town located in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 79 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Farming has been an important part of life in Farmers Branch for centuries. Today, there are over 1,500 farmers and ranchers who operate some 20 businesses in the town. Many of these farmers are active members of the agricultural community and contribute to local food production by growing fruits and vegetables, livestock, hay, cattle and corn; making cheese; brewing beer or spirits; or processing lumber. The first people to settle in what is now Farmers Branch were pioneers from Illinois who arrived in 1836. The town was founded on December 12, 1839 by citizens of Dallas County with land that had been donated by General Sam Houston. The original name for the settlement was "Hutchinson". A post office called Hutchinson was established on October 9, 1840, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on January 6th, 1865. However, because it served multiple towns within Dallas County (including Farmers Branch), its name never caught on as a proper appellation for the new community. In 1854 a sawmill was built along Buffalo Creek which became one of the largest mills west of the Mississippi River when it opened its doors to business. This mill produced lumber for buildings and furniture throughout much of America until it closed its doors around 1970s due to competition from cheaper imported lumber products from China subsidized by our government). In addition to this large mill there were also two other small mills located near present day Slaughter Road/Highway 290W (one operated by J H Anderson & Son which manufactured rock door hinges) and Factory Drive (which manufactured flour sacks). Lumber production continued into the 1920s with several larger mills still operating into today’s era including: Ewing & Co., Pfeiffer Bros., Westinghouse Lumber Company (a subsidiary of Isuzu Motors), Armour-Allis Manufacturing Company (the forerunner to Samco Industries Inc.), Aspinwall Millinery Corporation (owned by First National Bankruptcy Holdings LP), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s(Goodyear Tire & Rubber Corporation) Abbott Millsdivisional plant as well as many smaller outfits such as Cumberland Mills(later Ernie Furniture)and Beecham'sLumber( later Pacific LumberInc.).
