Farmers Branch, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. It was founded in 1849 by James Fenton and his family as a cotton plantation town on the banks of the San Jacinto River. The current City of Farmers Branch was formed in 1907 when the annexation of portions of neighboring Dallas created an extra-territorial municipality within the new Texas state government. In 1978, Farmers Branch became one of several cities and towns within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area to secede from Dallas County and become their own municipal unit. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Farmers Branch were James Fenton and his brother John Fenton, who arrived on May 16, 1849, along with three other families from Newton County, Virginia. The Fentons had come downriver from Richmond to purchase land from Sam Houston for £220 ($420). They began farming it immediately, founding a small plantation with sixty acres (0.24 square miles) of land near what is now downtown Farmers Branch. From this small farmstead growth eventually led to two more plantations: Humble Plantation and Cumberland Plantation; each measuring some seventy-five acres (27 km2) or more at its peak production yield per acre (1 hectare/hectare). In 1860, James’s son Jno., also named James, married Sarah Wilkinson and they started up another plantation called Prairie View which ran until 1886 when it was sold to a group of Dutch immigrants who renamed it Pemberton Farm after their home country – Nederlanden (the Netherlands). In 1869 Farmer James Fenton Sr., died suddenly at age fifty-six years old while working on one of his two plantations; leaving behind thirteen children aged between six and eighteen years old including five daughters named Sarah Jane “Sally” Ferguson Hodge Willis (1871-1947), Evalyn Florence “Evalyn” Ferguson Lane White (1873-1958), Alma Emma Grace Aiken Williamson (1875-1954), Nettie Elizabeth Knight Willoughby Hillyard(1877-1964), Willie Mae “Wm.'Mae” Ferguson Hodge Willis(1879-1960), Addison Garland Atkins(1881-1966) and Anna Louise Hitchcock Fordham(1883-1963). One daughter only survived into adulthood: Cynthia Lillie Ewing Childress.(1900-) Jameson Waddell Painter also lived in Farmers Branch at this time as did George Washington Carver Jr.(baptized December 12th 1865 - died October 1st 1948) - both African American agricultural scientists who helped improve agriculture throughout much of America during the late 19th century using their scientific knowledge gained through field work as well as teaching Agricultural Science classes at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.Hoffman 9 siblings Mary Johnson Painter (born November 15th 1870 - died February 24th 1951)and Addison Garland Atkins(born March 5th 1882 - died January 4th 1966)).
