Farmers Branch, Texas is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,681 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tarrant County. Farmers Branch is located on the Texan border with Dallas. Founded by Mormons in 1837 as part of Salt Lake City under Brigham Young's leadership, Farmers Branch rapidly grew into a major agricultural center during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location near railroads and waterways that allowed for easy access to markets and other resources. In 1909, Farmers Branch became one of thirteen townships in Tarrant County; it remained an unincorporated municipality until 1959 when it became a city under the terms of Act 798 of the Texas Legislature. The first post office in Farmers Branch was established on April 15, 1837 by John Ahern with Wm Hite serving as his clerk. The town prospered from its agricultural activity and soon incorporated as a municipality on November 3rd of that year with Robert Doherty serving as mayor. By 1860, there were over 50 businesses in Farmers Branch with a population of 1,500 people including several banks and churches. The Panic of 1893 struck hard at these businesses which forced many residents to leave their homes for fear they would lose their livelihoods if trade dried up or prices rose too high. In response to this economic hardship local leaders formed what was known as "the Boulders" which consisted of prominent citizens who pooled their money to buy goods from small farmers throughout the area- this helped keep prices low while continuing production within bounds so that business could remain profitable In 1899 local officials designated Farmer's Branch Road (now I-30) as a main artery connecting downtown Dallas and various farming centers across east-central TX ensuring continued flow of goods necessary for sustenance while also helpingto promote commerce in an area that had been largely rural since before there were any roads
