Farmers Branch, Texas is a small town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,979 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in Farmers Branch were the Caddo Indian tribe and their allies who founded the community in 1836 as "Kiowa Mission". In 1839, Colonel James K. Polk sent a detachment of U.S. cavalry under General Zachary Taylor to subdue Kiowa and other Native American tribes living near present-day Farmers Branch. Upon his return from Mexico City in 1840, Polk appointed George Catlett as colonel of Frontier Battalion #2 which fought against Apache Indians during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1854, John Nolen purchased 10 acres (4 hectares) of land east of what is today Farmers Branch from David Evans for $1,000 (). He named his land after his father-in-law, Colonel Amos Nolen (1793-1867), who had served as assistant quartermaster general during the Mexican War and had been selected by President James K Polk to lead an expedition against Apache Indians on October 16th 1850 (). After taking possession of his property, Nolen began building a home that still stands today called Old Fort Hill () on what he donated to Farmers Branch in 1865 (). In 1896,[1] farmers formed blocs and voted to incorporate as a village with a mayor and 12 trustees (), although some residents did not want to join because they felt it would be more difficult than living within larger towns such as Austin or Round Rock (). The first election for Village Mayor took place on November 3rd 1896 with Wm A. Steele running unopposed . Two years later on April 15th 1898,[2] elected officials were sworn into office when village trustees unanimously ratified an ordinance creating fire insurance rates for each householder () worth $5 per year at that time (); this ordinance was repealed two years later when premiums increased To $10 per year(). On July 11th 1902,[3] Voters approved passage of an amendment which authorized annexation by Dallas County; however this amendment never became effective due to objections from Dallas County Commissioners who felt that annexation would mean too much change for them financially (). On December 9th 1904[4], voters passed another amendment authorizing annexation by Travis County but this amendment also never became effective due to objections from Travis County commissioners who felt that annexing too many communities would become unwieldy (). Finally on February 2nd 1906,[5] voters passed an ordinance adopting county boundaries which are still used today
