Farmers Branch is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–McLennan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General James H. Farmers, who fought in the Mexican-American War and helped to create the Republic of Texas. The first settlers in what would become Farmers Branch arrived from Kentucky around 1827. They were farmers by trade and had no desire to move to an area with so much malaria and such hostile Native American cultures. In 1830, John Pritchard founded a small store and post office in what became known as Pritchard's Corner on Main Street (now US 287). A few years later, Samuel Kirkland added another store on First Street (now US 287) which served as the nucleus of what would become Farmer's Branch proper. By 1835, there were three stores operating within two blocks of each other - one location being called "the heart of the village". At that time, most people lived near their shops or businesses because it was necessary for them to sell goods quickly and easily get goods into town for sale locally or to be transported away for export purposes. In 1836 Donny Anderson married Maria Sanchez de la Cueva y Arellano who also resided in nearby Wichita Falls; they decided to move to Farmers Branch together after getting married here on July 4th of that year. There are numerous stories about how this became possible - some say that Maria's parents provided enough money for them both while others claim that Mrs. Anderson gathered any extra resources she could find during her stay in Wichita Falls before finally moving west with her husband when news came through about the Brazos River giving hope for new settlements northward along its banks.- In any case, by early 1840 they had acquired land east of Main Street just south of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard where they laid out a town called "Farmers Branch".. By 1850 there were over fifty structures located within present-day Farmers Branch limits; many built during Reconstruction following the Civil War including several schools – all designed by local architect John Wesley Hardwick.. As farming became more popular throughout southeast Texas during this period due to increased rainfall and better transportation options due to railroad construction across newly opened Oklahoma Territory (see Kansas River), many farmers turned their attention towards raising livestock rather than growing crops.– Although still used today as a place name primarily associated with agricultural nostalgia among those living outside of present day boundaries (due largely to lack thereof public knowledge/remembrance), Farmers Branch has played an important role in Johnson County history from its earliest days forward., This focus on agriculture has led not only unto current day commercial limitations on property usage within city limits but also long-standing disputes surrounding zoning changes which have been met with occasional community protests.– One such example took place last summer when developers working on downtown Wichita Falls' latest mixed Use development applied for zoning changes allowing them up until then only limited access onto residential properties adjacent thereto from Third Avenue.; however subsequent protest action by residents forced City Council members eventually authorized excavation beneath Third Avenue at least partially exposing historical Developer Property values thereby halting further development Plans
