The name was changed to Farmers Branch in honor of General John C. Frémont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as governor of New Mexico. In 1912, Farmers Branch became an independent city and remains so today.
The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Farmers Branch were the French in the early 1700s. The area was part of Spanish Texas until 1821, when it became part of the United States.
