By 1830, seven families had moved to what is now Farmers Branch and began farming land around what is now Main Street and I-30. In 1835, three brothers founded the town post office on Main Street with six subscribers. In 1836 two more brothers joined them and opened up a general store which served as the town's first courthouse until it burned down in 1840. A new courthouse was built in 1848 and served as municipal hall until it also burned down in 1840. In 1860 nine families bought 1 acre (0 hectares) of land west of present day I-30 for $2 per family member when offered through an assessment process called "deeding." This lot remained unsold until 1870 when James Ahern donated it to the community for use as a public parkland known today as Denton Park Southwestern Prairie Nature Preserve & Garden District #1
