The original settlers were men from Georgia who had come overland via Arkansas and Missouri. They began farming their land and built homes around Cedar Creek/Farmers Branch Station which served as their home base while they awaited word from President James Kenedy that they could removal westward into Mexican territory if they desired. When Kansas seceded from Mexico on November 16, 1860, following Lincoln’s victory at Emancipation Proclamation, all Texans were ordered south into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) under orders from President Andrew Johnson. Only those who applied for relocation east across state lines – including those living within central Texas – received permission to remain within our borders (the so-called “fortress families”). On January 24, 1861, General John Buford led a force of Confederate troops against local militia at Farmstead Gap near present-day Edwardsville Road and White Oak Bayou where he lost many men including Captain Denton Minton; these events are chronicled in an article entitled “Cowardly Attack By Rebel Troops Near Edwardsville” published by The Dallas Morning News on February 3rd 1861 . A few days laterGeneral Buford abandoned his plans for another attack against Union forces at Farmstead Gap after learning that Confederates had been outnumbered and outgunned by Union forces several times over . Gen Houstons cavalry regiment also participated in this battle but did not engage any units other then horsemen only skirmishing around village outskirts looking for retreating Yankees .. The area now known as Farmers Branch was first settled by Indian traders in the late 18th century. A post office called Farmers Branch was established in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1846, a group of Texans led by Moses Austin organized the Texas Rangers to fight Mexican forces near the Brackenridge Lane crossing on the Red River. The town of Farmers Branch was founded about two miles east of this location, and remain an important local center to this day. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Texas annexed what is now Oklahoma; at that time, Farmers Branch became part of Oklahoma Territory. In 1907, due to increased population growth along Interstate 35 (I-35), Farmers Branch Consolidated School District was created and renamed after its new residents. The district currently serves portions of Dallas County and Trulia Counties north of I-30.
