The post served as a depot for wagon trains carrying goods from New Mexico and other parts of the United States to Texarkana on the lower Colorado River. In 1865, Witherspoon's son, James Witherspoon, donated land to build a town on his father's holdings east of present day Euless Creek. The new town was named for John Fenton Wiley (1817-1892), who had been elected Governor of Texas in 1869 and 1870. In 1872, Wiley sold all his holdings in Euless to A C Williamson, one of Houston's early entrepreneurs. By 1880, Williamson had built up a large cotton plantation in what is now Brazoria County that employed more than 2,000 slaves; however, after several years of struggle by African Americans against racial discrimination inTexarkana and elsewhere within TXHarpers Ferry Independent School District (TFISD), Wiley finally ceded ownership of his plantation to TFISD on January 1st 1889 effective with the end of Reconstruction following America's Civil War. This event helped initiateTexarkana into an open society where African Americans were able to compete fairly with whites in most aspects of life.—present day Euless creek estuary forms much later due mostly to dredging operations which exposed older river bottom soils.— original location
