The town was named after General James Fayette Caldwell, who had purchased land east of Lubbock in 1836. Ammunition production resumed following World War II but declined thereafter due to technological advancements such as air compression explosives which made it possible to produce rounds more reliably at lower costs. Today there are several large ammunition producers including Winchester Repeating Arms Company(Winchester) and Remington Arms Company(Remington). With rail access expanding into Mexico during Reconstruction following the Civil War and new markets opening up along America’s Gulf Coast during Reconstruction, many farmers turned to cotton production because it could be shipped directly across country rather than having to travel through Confederate-controlled Texas. By 1871, most alluvial soils had been exhausted making farming difficult so many Texans turned to manufacturing instead including several small towns such as Knoxville and Waco before moving big factory plants northward into Canada where cheap labor was available after Confederation when that country broke away from British rule In 1886 Jeptha Hogg opened his Hogg's Ginnery on Main Street which became one of Corpus Christi's leading businesses until Prohibition shuttered it down in 1933 In 1916 Northrop Frye built his first oil refinery here – one that would become Corpus Christi’s preeminent industrial plant until it closed down in 1984 On October 1st 1905 local entrepreneur Harry Hughes set up a bank with six hundred dollars he brought over from eastern Oklahoma -Texas - becoming Corpus Christi’s first commercial banker Today we know HughesBank as Fifth Third Bank while downtown Plaza de Armas hosts numerous anchor stores like Macy’s Department Store and Sears & Roebuck blast furnaces were being erected all over town by 1907 when a group of businessmen led by Drury Ladd decided to build their own blast furnace plant southwest of town near present day IH 535 south
