Ennis, Texas is located in southern Llano County, Texas. The city was founded on October 6, 1881 by J.C. Ennis and his wife Lillie. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location at the crossroads of several railroads and its access to irrigation water from the Trinity River. In 1907, Ennis became an incorporated city with a population of around 10,000 people. The main economic engines of the early years were cattle drives and agriculture; however, during the 1970s and 1980s, Ennis experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Austin.Today, Ennis is home to over 20 businesses including ten banks and four grocery stores. Ennis, Texas is a small town located in the county of San Antonio, Texas. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Ennis were James A. White and his family who arrived on horseback in 1836. They built a cabin on what is now First Street and laid out a gridiron land grant to other pioneers including Edward Haughton, John Denton, David Burton and Andrew Jacklin. In 1839 White married Anna Baca and they raised their five children there before moving to Victoria where Anna had been born. From Victoria they moved to Ennis in 1845 when James A. White died and his widow took over the farmstead with her two sons James Jr., age 10, and George W., age 8 years old (both future ranchers). The Whites extended their ranch westward until it overlapped with that of Tobe Hooper which led to some friendly confrontations between the two groups over grazing rights; but ultimately these disputes ended without any major incidents. In 1850 Abraham Brown followed James A. White's example of locating a log cabin on what is now Main Street cornering First Avenue. Brown also laid out a grant totaling , acres grants totaling to others such as John Wesley Powell who settled along duck creek east of town in1853-54.Chronology: Abraham Brown In 1865 William Haughton opened up about four miles northeast of Ennis an early general store called "Haughton's" which became an important center for trade during the Mexican-American War period.Chronology: William Haughton By 1870 Ennis had become home to around 300 people with most residents working on ranches or farming. However by 1900 only 100 people remained living there while most everyone had moved away.

Ennis experienced significant growth after World War II due in large part to its connections with Austin.
