In 1952, the Ennis Chamber of Commerce organized a committee to study the possibility of developing a high capacity kitemarketing program in the town. A feasibility study was conducted and it was determined that there were no existing retail outlets in Ennis capable of handling large kit shipments. The Chamber convened a meeting with representatives from local businesses to determine what steps could be taken to develop such an outlet. A plan was formulated and initial negotiations were made with local retailers. On October 3, 1952, the first ever kit shipment from Ennis arrived at Local 479, a grocery store located in downtown. This event marked a turning point for the development of high capacity kits marketing in Ennis. From then on, Kit Industries LLC became responsible for developing and operating this new market segment in town. In 1957, Kit Industries LLC opened its second store in town - Local 536 - which served as both an operations center and distribution center for all subsequent stores operated by the company. By 1964, Kit Industries LLC had opened nineteen stores across Texas alone! Ennis, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 281,871 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Fort Worth on a plateau that overlooks the Trinity River valley and has a history as an agricultural center with cotton plantations and cattle ranches. The town was founded in 1881 by John Ennis, who named it after his father-in-law, James M. Ennis, who had come to Texas from Ireland in 1849. The first store in town was opened by Wm Henson in 1882 and soon thereafter there were several stores and a post office within one mile (1 km) of each other. The townsite was platted by John Denton in 1884 and elevation increased rapidly due to irrigation brought about by the Trinity River Valley floods of 1886–87 which destroyed many homes but also turned over much farm land to farming. A school was built in 1888 using money raised from local sales taxes for that purpose; this became Ennis Junior High School when it merged with nearby Midway Elementary School in 1922. After World War I, Ennis saw heavy military activity; housing barracks were constructed on Main Street near what is now United States Air Force Base Wright Patterson AFB during World War II; however, little development took place until after the end of World War II when large tracts of land downtown were annexed by Ft Worth to form Arlington County as part of its municipal government restructuring following the war's end. In 1975, most businesses closed because they could not compete with larger apartment complexes erected during that decade around Interstate 10 east of town limits.; however, two small shops remain open today: "The Cowboy" which has been open since 1951 and "Cotton Patch News" which began publishing weekly newspaper articles about local agriculture starting in 1916

Ennis was founded in 1881 by John Ennis and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the creek that ran through it. The first post office in Ennis was established in 1882. In 1895, the city of Ennis was created from parts of the previous town.
