Ennis is a town located in Potter County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1873 as a result of the Land Act of 1872, and named for Ennis, Ireland. The first post office opened in 1876. In 1907, the community built its first school and bought land for a second one. The current school building was built in 1912-13 by members of the local church congregation. In 1935, Ennis became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four councilors. In 1976 it annexed Slaughtertown to make one municipality with more than 2,000 residents; that annexation removed most of the rural character from Ennis while adding much-needed retail and commercial services to what had been once an agricultural community. In 1990 the population reached 1,948 when it annexed part of Cedar Park; that annexation raised controversy because Cedar Park is about halfway between Ennis and Austin on US 183/I-35 but does not have any municipal services or facilities within its boundaries. That situation has since been resolved by annexing Cedar Park again (to 1,811 residents) without having to go through further debate or vote; this annexation also added much-needed public transportation options to what had been an agricultural community primarily reliant on horse drawn wagons for travel long distances into neighboring towns such as Cedar Park and Slaughtertown.

Beason as a small agricultural community on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1886, Ennis became an unincorporated community and post office operated under its name until it merged with Midland to become Midland/Ennis Community District in 1954. The name "Ennis" originated from John A. Ennis's belief that the place should be named after him because he had most contributed to its development. The first store in Ennis opened in 1874 and prospered due to the good farming conditions around it, especially during the tough years of the Civil War which ravaged much of Texas like no other time before or since. even though many people left for fear of war their farms were still productive providing food for local families and businesses who also exported goods back home such as flour, cattle and lumber out of town via wagon trains bringing vast quantities back every week over 100 miles long! In 1886 when Midland/Ennis Community District was created with Cottonwood Creek as its dividing line between east Midland (now Dallas) and west Midland (now Austin), one of its first actions was to rename old John A.'s Store & Market at 11th Street SW "Midlanders' Store" & "Midlands' Post Office". It served as both a business address (& post office) until 1954 when it merged with nearby Cottonwood CreekPost Office into what is now known officially as Midland/Ennis Community District! Thanks largely to John A.'s Store & Market's success - along with donations from many individuals throughout our history including Mrs Milton Waddell - we have been able to maintain much important historical evidence including local flags flown at half-mast on May 25th annually throughout our entire community ever since!!!
Ennis was founded in 1836 by John Ennis and his brother, George. The townsite was donated by the Austin and Travis County Commissioners Court, which at the time included land that extended all the way to the San Antonio River. The first post office in Ennis was established in 1837, and it remained in operation until 1889. In 1871, a sawmill became operational in the town, followed by a store in 1872. In 1895, an oil well was drilled near Ennis and production began in 1896. By 1912, Ennis had a population of over 100 residents. The first school for students grades K-8 opened on November 15, 1888. It continued to operate until 1907 when it merged with neighboring Lamar High School. During World War I (1914-18), local businesses produced munitions for the war effort; during World War II (1939-1945), they produced food products such as gasoline and flour for military service; and during the Korean Conflict (1950-53), they manufactured tents and other wartime items
