Ennis, Texas is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Ennis comes from the Anglo-Spanish word "enriquillo" meaning "grains". The area that now makes up Ennis was settled by Anglos in 1881 and named for Enid Blythe (1861-1937), an American author and suffragette who had grown up in nearby Grapevine. In 1907, local merchants founded a school district which included present-day Ennis. At first, most of the men worked on farms or cattle ranching while the women raised crops and children; however, as more people arrived during the late 1800s and early 1900s to live in what is now Tarrant County, some began to work as shopkeepers or department stores. By 1920, over 60% of all male residents were employed outside agriculture or ranching while only 10% worked within the towns themselves. In 1950–51 a group of businessmen led by J.D. Power and Company decided to build a new shopping center on FM 620 just north of downtown Ennis; it would become one of America's largest retail developments ever built at that time with anchor stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Montgomery Ward Co., Kress Drugs Inc., J C Penney & Co., Stroud Rubber Products CO., Woolworth's Sam's Club Stores Inc., Hanes Corp., etc.; it also became home to System Electronics Corporation which manufactured radios and television sets until its merger with General Electric Company in 1984. In 1956–57 another developers group led by Sidney Poitier developed what is now known as North Side Shopping Center off US 71 near Interstate 35W exit 221A; it became home to Sears Holding Corporation until its bankruptcy in 2011 when all but two anchors vacated following store closures throughout most of 2011 due to economic conditions including low commodity prices and competition from Amazon Web Services LLC.. In 1971–72 Deere & Co.'s Deer Park Shopping Center was built across I-35W from North Side Shopping Center becoming home to Lord & Taylor Department Store before being abandoned in 2006 when Deere discontinued operations there permanently due to changing consumer trends towards online shopping.. The town of Ennis was platted on May 5, 1881 by cattle herders who were looking for a place to settle after purchasing land from Carlos Menard Rancho El Paso de los Rios near Wichita Falls. At that time Wichita Falls had about 4500 people and Fort Worth had about 25000 people; both cities were growing rapidly due to their expanding railroads and new petroleum discoveries. By 1886, cattle sales had increased significantly due to market demand for beef while agriculture languished; en route from Wichita Falls they passed through what is now downtown Ennis on their way to El Paso Springs where they exchanged goods with Mexican traders crossing into Texas via Eagle Pass north of Wichita Falls – this drove up prices for beef across much of central Texas which generated additional business opportunities for enishers including John Hogg (the founder of rock music) who built his first store in 1888 outfitting Lone Star cattlemen traveling through Mexico back then called “Hoggar” stagecoaches). In 1907, when Dallas became a city, several ranchers decided to move their herds nearby so they could continue operating their businesses without having to leave their homes; this led directly to Ennis’s rapid growth over ensuing years as more entrepreneurs relocated here seeking opportunity and cheaper living conditions than found elsewhere within Tarrant County at that time – also contributing were new oil discoveries off the coast of Sabine county adjacent to Houston making smuggling increasingly difficult so ranching competition decreased along with transportation costs associated with carrying goods long distances by wagon or horseback across open prairies etc.).
