Ennis is a town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vernon County. The first people to live in Ennis were white settlers who arrived in 1881. The town was platted on July 12, 1886 by J.C. Kinney and Wm. Henson. The name "Ennis" originated from an Indian massacre that took place near present-day Ennis in 1836. A post office was established at Ennis on November 3, 1886, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 20, 1912. In 1898, a cotton gin was built by James Beasley in what is now downtown Ennis for his own production of cottonseed oil and other goods needed for local commerce and manufacturing purposes; this set the stage for future industry in the town which would become one of the most important economic engines within Vernon County during its early years as a municipality. On January 1, 1907 (according to USGS), Ennis incorporated as a city under Section 5332 of the Texas Government Code with a population of 7051 citizens; however this incorporation did not take effect until January 1 following passage by theTexas Legislature of Resolution No., 107-A which designated Vernon County as being without municipal government due to financial difficulties faced by both cities andcounty having duplicate services furnished thereby rendering each city dysfunctional; thus City #5332 became effective on January 1st 1907! On October 15th 1922 significant progress had been made when Mayor Fenton Clements delivered his report recommending annexation into Arlington Heights through ordinance passed unanimously by all Commissioners present including Mayor Sprague - annexing en masse all over Vernon County!!! In 1928 after much discussion/ debate original site proposed for new high school located east off main street between Rusk and Patton Streets were relocated to current location across from old courthouse completing project!! As soon as final vote results were available we knew we had won !! Today marks 50 years since annexation happened & feel very proud that our community has grown so much while keeping many unique aspects

After the war ended in 1945, Ennis experienced some growth slower than other nearby towns but still managed to maintain its high-population level until 2000 when it reached its current size of 5,645 residents
