By 1870 AD, large numbers of artillery pieces had started being fielded across Europe; this weaponry would eventually lead to World War I when Cannonball Bombs were employed against German trenches

The first effective artillery shells were created in 1814 by Captain Richard Trevithick of the Royal Artillery. He designed a new type of propellant that would provide better accuracy and range than earlier shot types. The first successful fire with these shells was on 9 November 1814 during the Battle of Waterloo.

Ennis is home to several colleges and universities including Fort Worth American University which was founded in 1908 by American businessmen George Winaldson and James Hogg; Dallas Baptist University which was established in 1910; Baylor University which opened its doors in 1911; Rice University which joined the school system in 1912; Dallas County Community College - nowDallas County Community College District - which opened its doors in 1922; and Southern Methodist University - now SMU School of Law - which began operations in 1948.
Ennis was founded in 1851 by a group of Texans from the Mexican state of Coahuila. The town became a cotton center after the discovery of large deposits of the commodity in 1859. The population reached 4,000 by 1870, and 11,000 by 1880. In 1896, Ennis became an independent city.
