The Ennis Volunteer Fire Department operates a station on U.S. Highway 183 in the town center and has four other stations scattered around the community. Haney who arrived in 1871 from Louisiana and named his land "Haney's Prairie." In 1881, John Waddell established a farm 2 miles east of present-day Ennis on what is now owned by Halliburton Companies subsidiary TX Incorporated or Isuzu Corporation subsidiary I- Pipeline Company after he developed oil well near present-day Springdale for Shell Oil Company. On July 1, 1907 Texas Statehood became official and Johnson City became its seat; however, no action was taken to change the name to Ennis until 1961 when then Mayor William A. Goines recommended that it be changed to honor local resident Harry S. Fenton who had been an aide to Governor Hardesty during his early years as state legislator from 1911 until 1921 and later State Senator from 1923 until 1933; however no action was taken at that time either so the name officially reverted back to Haney's Prairie on November 3, 1961 although it continued to be used informally by some residents up through that date as "Enoch"

Ennis became a railroad junction, and in 1912 the Texas Railroad Company built the first railway line to Ennis. In 1916 the town was renamedProspero after Prospero, an Italian explorer who explored North America in the 16th century.
