He founded what would eventually become known asEnnis and began trading goods with Native Americans and settlers along the Aransas River. Over time, he became one of Hudspeth County's leading businessmen and developed a large Ranching industry that included hundreds of head of cattle and horses. By 1915, when City Council voted to rename the city after John Fenton - father of Mayor James Fenton - it had alreadygrown into one of Corpus Christi'S most important communities; home to many local businesses including A&P grocery store/cafeteria (now H-E-B), gas station (now Quiznos), post office (now USPS), library (former First Baptist Church), hospital (later Baylor Medical Center) and more than 100 homes! Today, much like back when Ennis first came together as a small town, its citizens continue their rural lifestyle while also enjoying many modern amenities enjoyed by larger cities such as Corpus Christi or Galveston Bayou areas). Some notable events from recent memory include: Hurricane Ike damage/ootingay flooding which left sections completely destroyed; National Football League games being played at Rice Stadium on campus during memorable seasons such as Super Bowl XLVI or Super Bowl LII; numerous state championships won by local high school teams over years; several major league baseball games being played at various venues within walking distance including Six Flags Fiesta Park; hordes OF tourists descending on downtown for Texas Open golf tournaments each year during March Madness Weekend; etc.; special events throughout the year honoring both current & past mayors & members of city council...the list goes on!

Ennis is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, on the Brazos River. The population was 2,951 at the 2000 census. In 1907, the oil and gas company Texaco established a drilling camp in what is now Ennis. The town was named after and around Ennis, England. The first people to live in what is now Ennis were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruit from the area. They built their homes made of earth, grasses and leaves from the local trees. By 1836, English settler George Hammond had arrived in what is now Hudspeth County and began trading with the Indians. He named his new land "Ennis" after nearby England because he felt it would be easier for traders to find an outcome other thanakey or Indian raids into his property. In 1837, entrepreneur James Fenton founded Texaco in nearby Commerce City with intentions of drilling for oil near present-day Ennis. With help from Fenton's friends including Sam Houston (a later president of Texas), enmity between Texans and Mexicans began to grow as railroads came through Hudspeth County; this led to increased opportunities for Texaco employees to buy land east of the Brazos River before it could be patented by Texans (the original owners). Texaco erected two rigs near present-day Ennis in November 1913 during its early days of production; these rigs are still visible atop formation walls today within a few miles of each other on I-10 just south of downtown Austin. A plaque marking both sites was installed in 2002 by then-Mayor Larry Elliott along with current Mayor Annise Parker CEQR/TXS
In 1865, Ennis was founded by James Dolan on the east side of the Brazos River. The town grew rapidly and soon had a flour mill, a sawmill, two churches, a post office and three hotels. In 1871, Ennis became the county seat of Austin County. The town's growth stopped when railroads bypassed it in the early 20th century. Today, Ennis is a small village located off Interstate 35 in central Texas with a population of around 100 people. It is home to the Lamar University Center and its college of arts and sciences as well as many other businesses and organizations.
