At its peak in 1890, El Campo had a population of 3,500 people; however, by 1910 it had fallen to 1,753 because of waves of new immigrants from Mexico who rushed into Texas during the Mexican Revolution (1865-1910). Many residents fledinvasion during World War II when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor; however, many others remained until after the war ended. Today's Business District has been built since 1945 on land acquired from Reliant Refining Company which operated a refinery on US 87 south of town before it was dismantled and replaced with an interstate expressway system.

The town has been home to numerous businesses including Dearborn Ford (now part of Toyota), Smiths Feed Store, Cotton gin, Masonic Temple No 2-arked stone building built in 1886 on Second Street - now used as a library/community center; Rice & Beans grocery store operated from 1903 until 1951; First Baptist Church built in 1907 on South Elm Street - now used as an art gallery; El Paso County Courthouse (1925) - now used as a museum In 1954-55 there was a flood that destroyed much of downtown El Campo but also left many buildings standing including: Water Tower (1925), Masonic Temple No 2-arked stone building built in 1886 on Second Street - now used as a library/community center; First Baptist Church built in 1907 on South Elm Street - now used as an art gallery; county courthouse (1925) - now used as a museum
