The nickname for El Campo is "The University of Texas" because it has been home to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) since 1912. The first European settlers in what would become San Antonio County were Spanish Franciscans who called the area Rancho de los Tejanos (later Rancho Viejo). A group of Mexican soldiers led by Colonel Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered an oil well near what is now downtown El Campo on November 8, 1859 and decided to operate it as a mining camp. They named their new settlement "El Paso" after José Pablo Eugenio Pérez y Costilla who had helped them find the well and surveyed the site. The town began to grow rapidly thanks to its natural resources and became known as one of America's most important agricultural centers with vast acres of cotton, wheat, potatoes, fruit trees, livestock and hogsarth plantations. In 1875 American general John Fetterman laid out a plan for distributing cattle through central Mexico via Brownsville before they could reach California overland while still in Mexican hands. This route became known as Fetterman's complimentary path or Comanche Trail because General George Armstrong Custer traveled it in 1876 when he fought against Mexico's forces during the Mexican–American War. On October 15, 1881 a post office was established at El Paso with Wm Hance as first mail carrier In 1910 local citizens voted to annex portions of Bexar County including Alpine and Presidio Heights creating what would become El Paso County On January 1st 1914 two school districts were merged into one: Alpine School District #1 which included Presidio Heights School District #2 In 1917 a fire destroyed much of downtown La Mesa but firefighters were able to save more than 150 businesses including many stores that reopened within days Two years later on December 5th1920 another fire destroyed much of downtown La Mesa again but this time officials responded quickly enough so that only nine buildings burned In 1924 Interstate 10 was built concurrent with US 95 making El Paso one of just six cities along I-10 that didn't experience any traffic congestion until its construction ended about 25 years later
