El Campo, Texas is a city in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population was 26,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of El Paso County and part of the Pecos Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as El Campo was first settled by Anglo- Mexican settlers in 1846. The town was named after General José de la Vega y Costilla who fought in the Mexican–American War and died there on October 15, 1847. The first post office in what is now El Campo opened in 1853. In 1874, an Act of Congress designated it as the county seat of El Paso County. On November 12th, 1912, $285,000 was approved to build a new courthouse and jail within one year and it opened on December 3rd, 1913. In 1932 a fire destroyed much of downtown but did not damage any buildings inside City Hall which still stands today (rebuilt). On January 1st 1957 local officials announced that they were demolishing almost all of downtown due to problems with air quality from nearby mines; however plans for redevelopment never materialized because mining interests became interested in building outside the city limits instead On July 15dy 2013 EL CAMPO CITY COUNCIL PASSED A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE FUTURE OF EL CAMPO CITY WOULD BE INDEPENDENT FROM THAT OF PECOS VALLEY MUNICIPALITY AND INDIVIDUAL CITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY AS A WHOLE
El Campo was founded in 1836 by a group of Anglo-American settlers. The town prospered for many years, but soon began to experience difficulty with the Mexican government. In 1846, the Mexican War began and led to increased violence in El Campo. The Englishman named John Sutter arrived in El Campo in 1847 and started a new business enterprise called the beef trade. He became very successful, and his company threatened to take over the local trade. To prevent this from happening, Mexico ceded El Campo to England in 1848 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
