El Campo Rifle Stock History began in the early 1800s when a man by the name of George W. Houck, who was also known as “The Rifle Maker”, bought land near present-day El Campo and started to build rifle stocks. Houck was one of the first people to start making rifle stocks in this area. He built his first stock in 1814 and continued to make them until 1830. From 1830-1835, he produced rifles at his farmstead called Rancho San Antonio (later Rancho Viejo). In 1835, Houck moved his operations to what is now downtown El Campo and continued making rifle stocks there until 1840. From 1840-1845, he made rifles at his ranch called Rancho de las Aguas (later Rancho Paso del Norte). In 1846, Houck sold all of his assets in Texas and moved back east where he died in 1849. His son George W. Houck Jr., took over production at their father’s ranch until 1861 when it was taken over by John Troup who continued it until 1886 when it was closed down due to lack of demand for rifles. The last rifle stock production on Rancho Viejo took place from 1886-1892 under the direction of Adolphus Busch who continues today as the owner and operator of Ranger Firearms Incorporated out of El Campo TX.
