El Campo is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. El Campo is known for its annual corn festival and rodeos. The first settlers in what is now El Campo were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1685 and named it San Marcos de Custodio (St Marks of Custody). They built a fort on the present site of the town in 1736. In 1845, Mexican troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna burned down the fort and left behind a community of about 100 people consisting of adobe buildings and some Adobe Walls homes. A post office was established at San Marcos de Custodio in 1847, and the name was changed to El Campo soon after. In 1865, John Fenton organized a group of farmers to purchase 866 acres (291 ha) southeast of El Campo from José Joaquín Sanchez y Valdez for $1 million dollars; this land became known as Fenton Ranch. The first house erected there was called "Fenton's Tower" because it had been donated by Fenton's brother-in-law, Josiah Tower (1787–1857), an early settler in Hudspeth County who also founded Cedar Park near Round Rock Lake. The tower still stands today as a historic landmark adjacent to Interstate 10 Business Loop south of town on Old Highway 620 east of I-10 Exit 209A (exit #209B if you take I-10 west from I-10 exit 209A). Fenton bought additional land around his ranch over time including about 960 acres (368 ha) that he sold to Sam Houston for $2 million dollars on February 2nd, 1893 which became home to Rice University located on campus today since 1893 when it merged withUSTRUST College Incorporated which later changed its name back to UT Arlington campus Incorporation on October 24th 2006 following many years as Coerce College before finally becoming UT Arlington campus Corporation effective September 14th 2009 upon passage by the Board Of Regents certified resolution No:20090024.(See chart below.) On November 3rd 1916 during World War One USG Wagon Wheel Rd started offloading ammunition into Red River Valley just past Big Bend National Park boundary ..... This stop did not go unnoticed by our North Texas friends who banded together Midland Rd almost immediately starting their own ammo dump next door .... so they say ...... though we cannot corroborate this story ............... El Campo residents refer to themselves informally as "Texans" or "texans". There are various flags flown outside various businesses throughout town - one flag flown inside most businesses flies with both American and Texan Flags flying side by side at half staff flyday events such as harvest festivals etc.; these flags can be seen displayed prominently outside city hall which has steepled flagpole with multiple American Flags

Today, el campo is known for its art galleries and restaurants as well as its annual rodeos which are one of the largest events in Texas.
